When I was a child I remember once Rudolph made his appearance on the television the Christmas season was official. I just came upon some information about Rudolph's creation and thought I would share. Of course it involves a retailer!

Robert L. May created Rudolph in 1939 as an assignment for Montgomery Ward. The retailer had been buying and giving away coloring books for Christmas every year and it was decided that creating their own book would save money. May considered naming the reindeer "Rollo" and "Reginald" before deciding upon using the name "Rudolph".

In its first year of publication, 2.4 million copies of Rudolph's story were distributed by Montgomery Ward. "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" is loved by millions and still selling copies.

A jazzy version of the “Little Drummer Boy” played as Chris and Katie Mitchell browsed among the holiday knickknacks at the Mackenzie’s store in the village.

It may have been the second annual Small Business Saturday, a day designed to encourage folks to remember the mom-and-pop store owners in the village of Palmyra and other small towns and villages who may not have the dollars to compete with the bigger retailers when it comes to holiday advertising.

But for the Mitchells, shopping at smaller stores has always been a part of their holiday plans.

“We’re looking for the things you don’t see on TV, the things you only find in the little stores,” said Katie Mitchell, of Palmyra.

Small Business Saturday is the latest initiative designed to keep shoppers in the giving mood, without the “get in the stores and get out of the way” experience of Black Friday and a warmup for the online shopping encouraged by Cyber Monday tomorrow.

“We do the Black Friday craziness,” Chris Mitchell said. “This is fun, and it’s more relaxed.”

Mary Darcangelo, owner of Mackenzie’s, is one of the store owners on the village’s Main Street hoping to benefit on this day, which for her is the day before “Super Sunday,” the day after “Festive Friday” and a few days after “Wildly Wonderful Wacky Wednesday.”

“I think the word has gotten out about it this year. I hear more people talking about it,” Darcangelo said. “It’s a wonderful reminder that we’re here, too, the little guys who can’t compete with the large box stores.”

Marcia Masille, owner of the Village Bookstore in Palmyra, is hopeful the idea takes off. Her pitch to shoppers was to offer what she did on Black Friday.

“Just quiet, gentle shopping, away from the crowds and the madness,” Masille said. “I never got into that Black Friday thing. It’s just insane.”

Spending money with local merchants helps the community, said Ethel Lawler, who is in town from New Jersey visiting family. She and her niece, Sarah Daskiewich, were antiquing in Palmyra and avoiding the malls so they didn’t have to spend their money on “junk” as gifts for family, she said.

“When we’re looking for Christmas gifts, we want something different,” Lawler said. “You do find that at the local stores. To me, it says you took more time to look for something special.”

Youare invited to attend the public “Operation Welcome Home” at the GreaterRochester International Airport. Plan tobe there from 11:30 amuntil 1:30 pm. There will be a flag waving welcome at thepublic entrance to Concourse A, followed by a presentation and reception in theInternational Room on the lower level concourse from 12:30-1:30pm.

SergeantJoseph H. Mack is a WWII veteran who served with the 28^th InfantryDivision as a soldier in the 112th InfantryRegimental Combat Team which consisted of the 112th Infantry Regiment. The Regiment plowed through France andGermany, participating in the capture of Paris and the bitter fighting in theHuertgen Forest. During December 1944, the 112th Infantry Regimental CombatTeam was holding a 6-1/2 mile sector in which the Germans attacked with nineDivisions. The Combat Team inflicted 1600 casualties and destroyed 18 tanksduring nine days of continuous action, which later became known as the"Battle of the Bulge." The Regiment was awarded battle streamersmarked Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and CentralEurope for their service in World War II. The unit was also awarded thePresidential Unit Citation for their actions during the Battle of the Bulge,16–24 December 1944. The unit was mustered out of federal service on 6 December1945 from Camp Gordon, Georgia.

The Veterans leave on their Mission as the sun risesSaturday morning, October 8. Their Honor Flight Rochester trip will takethem to Arlington National Ceremony to see the changing of the guard at theTomb of the Unknowns. Mid-morning they will visit their own WWIIMemorial, with stops in the afternoon at the Navy Plaza, the Korean, Vietnamand Lincoln Memorials, the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial and the newest AirForce Memorial with a vista of D.C. from high above the Pentagon.

Honor Flight Rochester, Inc. (www.HonorFlightRochester.org)-- one of 100 established hubs in the national Honor flight Network -- is anot-for-profit, fully-volunteer organization with a goal of taking every WorldWar II Veteran who otherwise would or could not go, and who wants to fly to Washington D.C.to visit and reflect together at Memorials built in their honor. Thetwo-day trip is free to all World War II Veterans and to Veterans of any erawho suffer a terminal illness. World War II Veterans typically fly in theorder their applications are received. Medical priorities are the exception. Rochester'sflying season is April toOctober. Honor Flight Rochester.

Mackenzie's loves weddings! We just had to share this lovely picture of Nicole and her bridesmaids. Nicole is a big fan of Vera Bradley. The girls are carrying a small duffel in Sittin' in a Tree and the beautiful bride is carrying a coordinating umbrella.

Another great shot from d'marie photography is at the New York State Fair! Such an honor and great photography!

It always amazes me when we reach the end of August. How did we get here already? What an amazing summer it has been for me personally and Mackenzie's too. Fall looks like it is going to be a busy time...so hold on to your hats!

Mackenzie's Block Building

I have had fun taking pictures of Mackenzie's building recently. I thought it might be interesting to share what little we know about the building. Years ago we fell in love with the Davis Building (138 East Main Street). Mackenzie's block building was built in 1893. Research on the building shows that the "Old Brick Block" as it is referred to was built by Menzo Davis. Mr. Davis built the fine brick block building using the lower floor for an up-to-date grocery store. The beautiful safe that you can see today, was used for "safe-keeping" pharmaceuticals and papers. The grocery store was active until Mr. Davis' death in 1904.

Mackenzie's continues to shine with the same entrepreneurial spirit that built this beautiful "Old Brick Block"!

Her dream of pursuing art became a reality, and Kelly Rae's work is now collected and cherished worldwide. Her unique look of layered mixed-media includes acrylics, oils, collage and ink, and her designs are featured in many publications and juried art festivals. Her art expresses honesty and tenderness while remaining lighthearted and colorful, and she hopes it will strike a chord with others. "My hope is that my work invokes a sense of clarity and peace inside you as you walk your own path in life, and that it inspires you to discover your own limitlessness."
